Greccio - Christmas Eve Grotto

ROME'S HISTORIC NATIVITY SCENES INCLUDING WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS NATIVITY SCENE

Our modern celebration of Christmas dates back to the 13th century, St. Francis decided he “would like to portray the Child born in Bethlehem, to see the hardships a newborn babe must endure, how he was placed in a manger and how he lay in the straw between the ox and the ass.”

So on December 24, 1223, in the center of Italy, a group of barefoot monks led a singing residents up the slopes of Mount Lacerone to Greccio, a simple monastery that was little more than a few interconnecting caves. In one of these, a layer of straw had been spread on the stone and beaten earth floor and a primitive crib had been placed in a corner. Around it were a donkey, an ox and a dozen peasants Francis had “borrowed” from the feudal lord. All night long, a procession of villagers braved cold and snow to see the unique tableau, their torches illuminating the night.

The ritual has been celebrated ever since, in Greccio and around the world. The grotto has remained virtually unchanged, with the exception of a nativity scene fresco painted on the wall by a follower of Giotto about a hundred years after Francis died in 1226. It was the world's first Christmas Eve procession.

SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF ROME'S NATIVITY ( Presepi ) SCENES

  • At the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore view five strips of wood from the original manger itself. There is also an oratory dedicated to the crib theme, dating back to the 7th century when the church was named Beata Maria ad Praesepe (Blessed Mary of the Crib).

  • Then Santa Maria d'Aracoeli, on the Capitoline Hill, is the world's most famous nativity scene due to the Santo Bambino. Said to have been carved from an olive tree in the Garden of Gethsemane, this life size statue of the Holy Child is clothed in luxurious fabrics and covered with precious objects donated by believers. For centuries he has been considered to possess miraculous healing powers. In the past he was often taken to visit the sick and at one time he had his own coach. From time to time he has been stolen - presumably to work a miracle on demand - then returned to the church. Consequently he is now kept in a glass case in the sacristy, but at Christmas he is brought out and placed in the manger, beneath a brilliant heavenly sky and surrounded by a host of exquisitely crafted pilgrims and their flocks.

  • Some of the larger churches such as Il Gesù, Sant'Ignazio, San Giovanni in Laterano and Santa Maria in Trastevere  have elaborate dioramas as big as a child's bedroom, with blacksmiths and housewives busy at work, tiny fireplaces ablaze, the heavenly host floating above waxing and waning stars, rosy dawns, and even a comet endlessly leading the way across the sky.

  • At church of Sant'Andrea delle Valle a nativity scene features dozens of tiny figures, each piece hand-carved in great detail.

  • Not all the presepi are in churches. In the Stazione Termini the miniature sheep huddle in front of a knee-high Arch of Janus, next to the Porta San Paolo and a segment of ancient Roman wall.

  •  The City of Rome builds its official crêche on the Spanish Steps. A scaled-down replica of an entire 18th-century street, it features a tavern called “The Turks” and one of the Pasquino statues upon which irreverent Romans used to pin their anonymous criticisms of the Popes

  • Not to be outdone by the municipal authorities, the Vatican's manger in St. Peter's Square is larger than life size, with huge hunks of fake sheep's cheese, mounds of real straw, and a net to catch the coins of the faithful.

  • Santa Maria in Via  A permanent crêche is in the church of S. Maria in Via (pictured at left). It boasts sumptuous costumes of velvet, silk, brocade, satin and leather, magnificent flying angels and the obligatory smoking Vesuvius.

Cosma e Damiano, flanking the main entrance to the Roman Forum, has an enormous presepio. A masterpiece of 17th-century Naples, which is generally considered the high point of nativity scene craftsmanship, it features hundreds of figures, fifty angels and scores of animals.

Finally, for those who really love nativity scenes, there is the little-known Museo Tipologico Internazionale del Presepio. It is full of cribs from thirty countries ranging from South America to the Far East. The more than 3000 figurines are made from paper, wax, shells, lead, corn husks, tin, wood, marzipan, bread, hay, leaves, fabric, cork, terra cotta, sugar, biscuit - just about anything you can imagine. One entire crêche is built inside a hazelnut shell, and a Communist-era Polish one is topped by a red star.

If you want more than porcelain figurines, human recreations are staged everywhere on December 23 or 24. One of the best is in the little mountain town of Barga, in northwestern Tuscany. At 7:30pm on December 23, about 200 costumed participants congregate behind Joseph and Mary at the city gates. They then wander through the streets requesting shelter of the artisans, who also wear colorful costumes as they ply their trades in several dozen tiny workshops. Everybody winds up in the piazza just in time to see a comet star lead the Wise Men to the Baby Jesus’ manger.

Ostia Antica

 DEPARTURE 08.30 A.M.
(From April 1 to October 31: Tuesday and Friday morning - 4 hours approx).

Not everybody realizes that, at only 20 miles from the Capital, an extraordinary archeological site, second in importance toPompeii, awaits: the impressive excavations of Ancient Ostia.

This was the city-harbor funded by ancient Romans, at the mouth of the Tiber, and which later was hidden by floods and mud to recent days. Its remnants are thus better preserved than in Rome itself and offer us an extraordinary testimonial of the Roman civilization along its whole evolution. By walking trough the ancient roads we will plunge straight into the past everyday life of a refined and dynamic city where the cult for arts and pleasures was sovereign.

Admire fact the ruins of majestic public buildings, like temples, theatres, fora or basilicas as well as private ones, like houses, shops, inns, workshops etc., ranging from the sumptuous to the humblest. Particularly attractive are the famous mosaics of the 12 thermal baths and of the various harbor offices (the business square). A further bonus: archeology spared the whole area from modern artifacts turning it into a delicious natural oasis, constantly cooled by healthy see breezes.
