See where it happened...the living museum of Pompeii 79 A.D. POMPEII / MT. VESUVIUS / SORRENTO Nothing compares to the magic and mystery of Pompeii. You view the seemingly tranquil Mt. Vesuvius and then walk among the remains of a city that was once buried underneath 30 feet of ash during its violent eruption. Explore a bakery, theatre, gymnasium and public bath. See the homes of the wealthy as well as the middle and lower classes. The ruins are extensive providing a detailed view of life nearly 2000 years ago. Of particular interest are the still wonderfully preserved colorful murals and mosaic designs in some of the wealthy homes of the time. Enjoy exploring the living museum of the town of Pompeii for as long as you wish. It is all there vestiges of a time and lifestyle literally sucked breathless in a split second then entombed for two thousand years. Since it is your private tour, you can choose also to go to the top of Mt. Vesuvius. Vesuvius is unavailable through group tours. From the top you can see the the enormous crater left when the volcano erupted. You can also see the path that the destructive volcanic lava took as well as the Bay of Napoli and the famous Amalfi Coast. The private car can drive nearly to the top of the mountain. From where we park it is about a 30 minute walk along a wide flat dirt path. At the top along with refreshments stands and souvenirs is the spectacular view. In the same area is the small resort suburb of Herculaneum which was also destroyed during the eruption of Vesuvio in 79 A.D. Herculaneum is unavailable through group tours. Legend has it that Hercules himself founded the town and it became a very popular summer retreat for the wealthy Romans in ancient times. It was buried under volcanic mud and ash for centuries. Because of that, some of these ruins appear to have been even better preserved than those of Pompeii. You can see original wooden beams in some of the houses, staircases, and furniture. In the ruins of an ancient wine shop for example you can see amphorae still resting on carbonized shelving If you wish there is a famous Italian restaurant near the excavation site where we can stop for lunch. Finally, if you still want more, take a drive along the Amalfi Coast to Sorrento. The Amalfi Coast visit is unavailable through group tours. See the stunning rugged terrain that is world famous.
